Investigating hog manure was hardly the glamorous assignment Nicolette Hahn Niman pictured when she left everything behind to work for Robert F. Kennedy in New York. But Kennedy wouldn’t take no for an answer, and there began Niman’s odyssey into the factory farming industry and her quest for sustainable, healthful meat and dairy options. We’re also joined by top chef, Mark Reinfeld who specializes in healthful foods and vegan cooking for an inspired and peaceful life. Join Vicki today for this special rebroadcast!

In her new book Righteous Porkchop – Finding a Life and Good Food Beyond Factory Farms, Nicolette Hahn Niman shares an inside view of factory farming and how the animals ‘produced’ in these institutions are treated. She also shares how we can ensure that the food we’re eating is untainted. And how we can reclaim the pleasures of good eating by purchasing from small producers raising animals in a cruelty-free, sustainable manner. Hahn Niman is an environmental activist who has been published in the New York Times and spoken at many conferences including the American Public Health Association and Sierra Club’s Healthy Farms Conference. A former senior attorney with Bobby Kennedy’s Waterkeeper Alliance, she is married to Bill Niman, the founder the Niman Ranch, a collective of traditional farms.

Later, Mark Reinfeld joins us to discuss the best of vegan food. Reinfeld’s been preparing inspired gourmet vegan and live food cuisine for over 15 years. He is the founding chef of the Blossoming Lotus restaurant, winner. He is the recipient of the 2006 Platinum Carrot Award for living foods – a national award given by the Aspen Center for Integral Health to America’s ‘Top Healthy Gourmet Chefs’. His first book, Vegan Fusion World Cuisine has won 9 international awards including ‘Cookbook of the Year’, ‘Best New Cookbook’ and a Gourmand Award for ‘Best Vegetarian Cookbook in the USA’. We’ll discuss his new cookbook, The 30-Minute Vegan, co-authored with his wife, Jennifer Murray.
