For more than three tumultuous years, Kelly and Craig Perkins lived in and out of hospitals, until Kelly’s body eventually succumbed to her failing heart. At one point she was given just one week to live. But on November 20, 1995, Kelly received a heart transplant at UCLA. Determined to live life on her terms, Kelly shocked the medical world by becoming the first-ever heart recipient to reach the peaks of some of the world’s most challenging mountains, including Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa – one of the infamous “Seven Summits”.
