Life From Scratch: A Memoir of Food, Family and Forgiveness is not a typical cookbook… as Sasha Martin undertook the journaling of her 195-country culinary odyssey, she came to realize her new cooking obsession was rooted in something much deeper. The further she ventured into her journey, she began unlocking memories of a rough-and-tumble childhood and the loss and heartbreak that came with it. Food and cooking provided an emotional outlet for her, both during her troubled childhood, and as she came to terms with it. Sasha is an award-winning writer and blogger who spent almost four years cooking her way around the world. Her work has been featured on NPR, Whole Living, Bon Appetit, The Smithsonian, and several other major media outlets. Her website, Global Table Adventure, is a go-to hub for foodies around the world.

Money relates to everthing – if you’re working, paying bills, shopping, then you are CEO of your own financial department. Rich Bitch: A Simple 12-Step Plan for Getting Your Financial Life Together… Finally empowers women to take charge of their finances, leading to taking charge of their lives. Financial expert and former CNN/CNBC anchor Nicole Lapin offers up personal “Confessions of a Rich Bitch” and dozens of “Bitch Tips” on everything from buying in bulk (don’t!) to paying off loans to contribute to your employer’s 401K. Nicole got her start in finance at age 18, reporting from the floors of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade for First Business Network. She went on to become the youngest anchor ever at CNN and claimed the same title later at CNBC. She has gone on to serve as business anchor and correspondent for Bloomberg Television as well as hosting her own show on AOL.com.

May 18: The Mystical Backpacker, a Global Bicycling Odyssey, and The Spiritual CEO ~ PODCAST

Today’s show is loaded with adventure, facing the unknown head-on, and finding spiritualism in the most unlikely of places. First, author Hannah Papp lived out the fantasy many of us have of leaving the daily grind behind and going on a journey of self-discovery, no schedules, no commitments, no plan, just following her instincts. She shares her story in The Mystical Backpacker: How to Discover Your Destiny in the Modern World.

Our next adventurer today rode a tandem bicycle through 81 countries, along the way inviting over 1,000 total strangers to hop on and accompany him on his journey. Jamie Bianchini documents his epic expedition, in which he performed charitable acts at many stops along the way, in A Bicycle Built for Two Billion.

Our final guest today is a proponent of introducing meditation into the workplace environment and bringing about a spiritual awareness in leadership, leading to her being known as The Spiritual CEO. Alka Dhillon, author of The Om Factor: A Woman’s Spiritual Guide to Leadership, uses her book to help bring disparate aspects of your life into a harmonious whole, at work and at home.

We’ve all secretly wanted to leave our everyday lives and become adventurers… Hannah Papp is one of the brave few who actually took that leap. In The Mystical Backpacker: How to Discover Your Destiny in the Modern World, Hannah shares her story of quitting her job, buying a EuroRail ticket and a map, and leaving town on a 3 month journey sans a plan, directions or help. Her discoveries led her down a path she never dreamed of following as she discovered what was missing in her life. While her personal story is shared throughout the book, she also includes hands-on instructions and tips to help inspire readers to embark on their own vision quest. Hannah currently heads up the Northern Virginia Mind, Body, and Spirit Group and is a succesful author.

Jamie Bianchini needed a lift. A big one. After a series of spectacular business flops drove him into bankruptcy and the love of his life kissed him goodbye, Jamie knew he needed a world of help. But instead of seeking assistance from a counselor or support group, he sought comfort where he’d always found it —on his bicycle. So he decided to go for a ride… around the world… on a tandem bike… inviting strangers he met to join him for a spin. A Bicycle Built for Two Billion is the moving story of an audacious optimist who tried to change the world – while hoping the world would change him – one rider at a time.

Two quotes can sum up Alka Dhillon’s new book, The Om Factor: A Woman’s Spiritual Guide to Leadership. The first is by the author herself… “Leadership is not about showing others the way. It is aligning your vibration with theirs to create a collaborative roadmap.” The second is from world renowned spiritualist Deepak Chopra… “Alka eloquently shares how to bring spirituality into the business world by giving the tools and steps to the soul of leadership.” The guidance contained in this book can be used to create harmony at work or in your home life. Alka is founder and CEO of Technalink, and has won numerous recognitions and awards for her business accomplishments, and is a frequent keynote speaker.

May 11: 1] Take Control of Your Genetics 2] Vertigo! When the World Spins Out of Control

“It’s genetics.” This phrase, often accompanied by a deep sigh, is a way people often express why they can’t change something about themselves they wish they could. But Dr. Mitchell Gaynor has unlocked a way to avoid being a victim of your genes, featured in his new book The Gene Therapy Plan: Taking Control of Your Genetic Destiny with Diet and Lifestyle.

Linda Zonana’s struggles with Meniere’s Disease, which effects the inner ear and can cause vertigo symptoms, led her to the realization there are very few books on the subject written for the general public. After interviewing over 50 people coupled with her own experiences, she presents her findings in Vertigo! When the World Spins Out of Control.

“You do not have to be a victim of the genes you are born with,” says Dr. Mitchell Gaynor. “There are five areas where we can take control of gene expression with nutrient science… heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and aging.” In his new book The Gene Therapy Plan: Taking Control of Your Genetic Destiny with Diet and Lifestyle, Dr. Gaynor answers various questions regarding genetics, such as how DNA unfolds into disease, what nutrients are gene changers and how the foods you eat can change your genetic predispositions, how effective supplements are, and whether you can reverse a disease that has been diagnosed. Dr. Gaynor is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Weill-Cornell Medical College and is board certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology. He has been featured by the New York Times, CBS Evening News, and Good Morning America.

Vertigo! When the World Spins Out of Control is about “vestibular” illnesses – those that arise in the inner ear and precipitate the sickening experiences of vertigo and imbalance, usually without warning. With few books on vertigo written for the general public, author Linda Zonana saw a need for one that offered detailed information concerning these diseases. The book is unique in that more than fifty people were interviewed in order to provide a good look at a variety of real life experiences, including chapters on the psychological effects of illness, challenges encountered in seeking help, conventional and unconventional treatments, anatomy and functioning of the ear, as well as a history of the development of a scientific understanding of vertigo. Linda has a master’s degree in Social Work, and works as a clinician at a mental health agency.

May 04: 1] Where You Go is Not Who You’ll Be 2] Dear Carolina 3] A Woman-Powered Farm ~ PODCAST

New York Times columnist and bestselling author Frank Bruni provides a path out of the anxiety provoking belief that a young person’s worth is established by which colleges say yes and which say no in Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania.

Emboldened by winning a couple writing contests, southern belle Kristy Woodson Harvey decided the time was ripe to write a “great southern novel.” The resulting work is Dear Carolina, a story that proves families aren’t born, they are made.

The classic American farmer riding a tractor, wearing overalls and rising at dawn to tend to the animals and crops is still alive and well… with one major difference. Today, that hard-working farmer may very well be a woman. Audrey Levitano tells the story of how she became that woman in Woman-Powered Farm: Manual for a Sustainable Lifestyle from Homestead to Field.

Every year high school seniors open college rejection notices that destroy their confidence and lead them to have a sense of failure. Over the last few decades, Americans have turned college admissions into a terrifying ordeal, made worse by being preceded by test prep, tutors, stratagems and rankings that bludgeon a young person’s confidence. Where You Go Is Not Who You’ll Be: An Antidote to the College Admissions Mania by New York Times columnist and bestselling author Frank Bruni turns that process on its head by giving students, and their parents, a new outlook on this deeply flawed competition and provides a path out of the anxiety it provokes.

Dear Carolina by real Southern Belle and steel magnolia Kristy Woodson Harvey examines the idea of a traditional family through the story of baby Carolina and the two women who love her. Kristy shows that life circumstances shape us, but don’t define us, and the result is a wonderful tale of what it means to be a family. Kristy is a literature major who became a financial planner, but never lost her love of writing.

Female famers are the most rapidly growing segment of the farming population today, with over one million women working on farms and twice the number of female-led farms than there were in the 80’s. These women grow $13 billion worth of produce a year. Woman-Powered Farm: Manual for a Sustainable Lifestyle from Homestead to Field is the story of Audrey Levitano, who left her job teaching English to start a farm in the heartland of Virginia, but more than that, it’s a practical guide for anyone who dreams of taking the leap into farming, whether that means opening a small produce stand or taking over the family farm.

But you are not quite ready, all of that means nothing if you haven’t prepared your body for the changes in environments and situations you are about to experience. Dr. Anita Haque and her certified fitness trainer husband Don Parker have seen what happens when people fail to prepare their bodies for vacation dozens of times, watching vacations become memorable for all the wrong reasons as travelers get sick, have a terrible time, and need a vacation from their vacation when they get home. Her husband Don discovered weight training in early childhood and it soon became his passion, leading him to leave his job in corporate America to follow his dream of becoming a certified fitness trainer and helping others with their training and lifestyle.

ABC News anchor Dan Harris has found a way to be happier, calmer – and according to his wife – nicer despite being in one of the most competitve fields around. He chronicles the strange odyssey that bought him to this point in his book 10% Happier:How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help that Actually Works—A True Story. And if it can work for someone as stress-prone and skeptical as him, it just might work for you. Far from being the typical solve-all-your-problems self-help, what Dan stumbled upon quite by accident through a bizarre series of events is a practical and easily doable approach that leaves the reader with a simple and potentially life-changing takeaway. Click here to follow Dan on Twitter.

Meriweather Group CEO and founder David Howitt wrote Heed Your Call: Integrating Myth, Science, Spirituality and Business to direct the reader on a path to living a more authentic and uncompromising life… or as fashion designer Donna Karan poetically puts it, the book’s message “is what I believe to be an example of the journey we are all on toward creating a more soulful economy.” Howitt demonstrates the power of ‘And,’ proving life does not have ot be an either/or affair, encouraging us to integrate our inner musician and computer programmer, our inner poet and scientist. He shows how in the end, embracing the dualities inside of us all will make you fully integrated, benefitting both your business and your personal life. This book is perfect for the job seeker losing all hope, the innovator who finds their creativity stifled, the spiritualist afraid financial success will undermine their spirituality, and anyone else who has doubts about the path they are on.

Apr 13: 1] The Most Important Conversation 2] A Planet Overrun 3] Step Into Nature ~ PODCAST

As relatives age or loved ones develop terminal illnesses, nothing can be more unsettling and uncomfortable than having a frank discussion with those who are nearing the end, and consequently we oftentimes put it off until either it’s too late to truly determine the final wishes of those who are departing. The Conversation: A Revolutionary Plan for End of Life Care by Dr. Angelo Volandes addresses the urgent need to have open and honest communication between the doctors, patients, and their loved ones.

Also today, Vicki chats with Northeast Trust Wildnerness president Tom Butler regarding Overdevelopment, Overpopulation, Overshoot, a large-format coffee table book featuring over 300 pages to demonstrate how human activity has transformed the Earth, and not always in a positive way.

Finally, we will also explore how to nurture spirit and imagination in your everyday life with poet Patrice Vecchione, author of Step Into Nature, a guide to make nature personal again.

Dr. Angelo Volandes wants patients, families, and doctors to place greater emphasis on the oldest trick in the black medical bag; talking to each other. With The Conversation: A Revolutionary Plan for End of Life Care, he illustrates the urgent need for open communication and discussing critical matters to counteract what often becomes an assault of medical intervention at the end of life. He addresses the need to find out the dying persons wishes… such as any fears they may have, and what is vitally important to that individual, including and spiritual, philosophical or cultural beliefs that guide them in medical decisions. Dr. Volandes is a physician and researcher at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, and is also the founder of Advance Care Planning Decisions, a nonprofit organization devoted to encouraging The Conversation through the use of videos.

Step Into Nature: Nurturing Imagination and Spirit in Everyday Life by Patrice Vecchione highlights the importance of reconnecting with nature to engage the restorative power of the outdoors by offering activities and resources that can easily be used by individuals, families, or groups. Patrice is a poet, artist, and author who will be appearing for a book signing and reading in Seattle at Elliot Bay Books on Tuesday, April 14th at 7PM.

Overdevelopment, Overpopulation, Overshoot by Tom Butler is a large-format coffee table book featuring more than 300 pages of a world overrun by human activity. “We wanted to go straight to the emotional center of a viewer, someone who has never thought about the population question, and say: Here is how the Earth has been transformed,” Butler explains. Butler is the editorial projects director of the Foundation for Deep Ecology and president of the Northeast Wilderness Trust. The book is produced as part of the 2015 Global Population Speak Out campaign and you can read it for free on their website.

Rose with gothic novel The Witch of Painted Sorrows.

New York Times bestselling author Hazel Gaynor in her own words… “In writing A Memory of Violets, I was constantly struck by the cruel contradiction of the lives of the flower sellers. Here were some of the poorest women and children in society, and yet every day they were surrounded by the beauty of the flower markets. Black-and-white images and shaky newsreel footage taken during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries give a fascinating glimpse into market life in London, but it is difficult for us to imagine what these scenes would have looked like in full color. Oddly beautiful, perhaps.” Having been featured in The Sunday Times and the Irish Times, the English born Gaynor currently resides in Ireland and was the recipient of the 2012 Cecil Day Lewis award for Emerging Writers.

The latest from M. J. Rose, The Witch of Painted Sorrows, is a provocative spellbinder set against the lavish backdrop of Belle Epoque Paris, spinning the yarn of a New York socialite fleeing an abusive husband for her grandmother’s home in Paris, and finding something even more menacing. Richly imagined and full of suspense, it illuminates the fine line between explosive passion and complete ruination. Rose has authored over a dozen novels, and is the co-president and founding board member of International Thriller Writers and the founder of the first marketing company for authors: AuthorBuzz.com.
