Elijah Winfrey has several passions in his life, and has found a way to channel them into giving back to his community and being among those who strive to really make a difference in others lives. From being an active volunteer for the Make A Wish Foundation, to starting Team Winfrey, he is constantly evolving ways to enhance the lives of others. With a niece and nephew who are both autistic, he is also a strong advocate for raising awareness for autism, and serves as vice president of the Seattle Children’s Autism Guild. An avid golfer, Winfrey is involved in several charity golf events and coaches at The First Tee of Greater Seattle.

Although exclusively foraging for wild plants is no longer feasible, there is no reason that we can’t select the fruits and vegetables that come closest to providing the nutritional bounty of their wild ancestors while also pleasing the modern palate. Bestselling author Jo Robinson has uncovered dozens of these jewels of nutrition hiding in plain sight in ordinary supermarkets, as well as farmer’s markets, U-pick orchards, and seed catalogs. In her new book Eating on the Wild Side, Robinson covers how to store and prepare these stellar fruits and vegetables to maximize their healthy benefits. She also shares some fascinating and surprising facts, like why canned blueberries are more nutritious than fresh ones, how some of the newer varieties of supersweet corn are no better than a Snickers bar, and why you should eat broccoli as soon after harvest as possible!

Aug 05: 1] Human Trafficking 2] Office Idiots ~ PODCAST

In a society where the smallest things are under close scrutiny and the watchful eye of so many as techonology has shrunk the world, how is it human trafficking remains prevalant in this country? Human rights activist Tess Cacciatore shares her insights into this extraordinary issue. Later, if you consider “boss” the ultimate 4-letter word, or are tired of all the jerks at work, then Office Idiots author Ken Lloyd is here today to help you cope with your workplace being a jerkplace!

Conversations Live with Vicki St. Clair airs every Monday at noon Pacific on KKNW 1150AM or 94.9FM HD. Like Conversations Live on Facebook for exclusive updates and show previews, and follow Vicki St. Clair on Twitter, too!

Human trafficking is here in our backyard and it’s all too real, as 72% of trafficking victims identified are from the US. Even more sobering is that 27% of victims identified over a 4 year span were children, with two-thirds of them being girls. Tess Cacciatore, human rights champion and co-founder of the non-profit Global Women’s Empowerment Network (GWEN) takes an in-depth look at how this issue continues to be prevalent in a society where it seems our smallest movements can be tracked and recorded. She will also discuss the cultural differences that are often at the root of the problem, and how women can fight back when their own culture tells them not to. Combining over two decades of film and non-profit experience, Cacciatore has a truly unique approach to human rights… fostering education and connectivity through technology to promote an agenda of peace and equality.
Based upon thousands of letters to his newspaper column and website, www.jerksatwork.com, Ken Lloyd penned Office Idiots to spotlight workplace jerks wherever they exist in an organization. In addition to practical advice on what to do or say when you encounter them, the book shows you how to deal with Techno-jerks and E-jerks, deal with some really off-the-wall jerk behaviors, avoid enabling the jerks… and perhaps most important of all… make sure you don’t become one! Lloyd is a nationally recognized management consultant, speaker, author, and newspaper columnist. He holds a PhD in organizational behavior from UCLA, and has taught numerous MBA classes at his alma mater’s The Anderson School, among other univiersities.

Finding love and lasting intimacy can be a difficult goal for many women, and oftentimes it leads to accepting a purely sexual relationship with the hopes it will lead to more, only to be let down time and again. Using real stories from women of various ages and stages of life in her new book Having Sex, Wanting Intimacy: Why Women Settle for One-Sided Relationships, Dr. Jill Weber shows how these patterns of behavior, which she refers to as “Sextimacy”, produce disappointment, depression, and a low self-esteem, causing a vulnerability to being used. It’s a hard pattern to break, but Dr. Weber provides hope with some very clear tips on how to stop it. Dr. Weber is a clinical psychologist with a private practice in the Washington DC area. She has appeared in media outlets as varied as Nightline, Teen Vogue, CNN, Seventeen Magazine, and The Discovery Channel, among others.

Sue Aikens is the sole resident of Kavik River Camp… her nearest neighbor, besides 80 plus grizzly bears within a 10-mile radius, is 300 miles away. Returning home after months away for surgery on a broken ankle, Sue is faced with uncertainty. Is her camp even accessible in the winter snow? Has it been overrun by wildlife? Does she have the neccessary supplies to survive another vicious winter? Featured on National Geographic’s Life Below Zero, she has faced -100 degree temperatures, 100 mph winds, and circling wolves… and has taught herself to ignore fear in the face of it all. Most people’s nightmare is her way of life.

Judy Blume is the iconic author of countless bestsellers, including Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, Blubber, and the five book series featuring the irrepressible Fudge. Co-written by her son Lawrence, who also serves as the director of the film, it tells the story of Davey, a 17-year old girl abruptly relocated to the strange “atom bomb” town of Los Alamos, New Mexico. Grieving over the sudden and violent death of her father, Davey meets a mysterious young Native-American while exploring the surrounding canyons, and they make a connection that helps her bridge the gap from heart-breaking pain and confusion, to love and life after the tragedy. Starring Willa Holland, Tatanka Means, and Amy Jo Johnson, Tiger Eyes represents Blume’s uncanny ability to tell a coming of age story that appeals to any age! See the trailer here!

USA Today and NY Times bestseller Lisa Renee Jones was one of the top businesswomen in the country when she decided to embark on an undertaking of a more creative bent.
