As friends began “going back to the land” at the same time that a health issue emerged, Kathleen Alcalá set out to re-examine her relationship with food at the most local level. Remembering her parents, Mexican immigrants who grew up during the Depression, and the memory of planting, growing, and harvesting fresh food with them as a child, she decided to explore the history of the Pacific Northwest island she calls home. The result was The Deepest Roots: Finding Food and Community on a Pacific Northwest Island, written to remind the reader that innovation, adaptation, diversity, and common sense will help us make wise decisions about our future. Kathleen is the author of a collection of essays, The Desert Remembers My Name: On Family and Writing; three novels, including Treasures in Heaven; and a collection of short stories. She lives on Bainbridge Island.

Katherine Neville is a best-selling author and public speaker who had the honor of being the first author chosen to become a member the Advisory Board of the Smithsonian Libraries in Washington, DC. As a great devotee of reading and research herself, Neville has co-created several awards and grants presented by the Smithsonian Libraries.

But the women who participate realize the problems of today’s working world are more subtle, less pronounced, harder to identify…and harder to prove… than those of their foremothers. These women weren’t just there to vent. They needed battle tactics. And so the Feminist Fight Club was born. Every month, the women would huddle in a friend’s apartment to share sexist job frustrations and trade tips for how best to tackle them. Author Jessica Bennett is an award-winning journalist and critic who writes on gender issues, sexuality and culture. She is a feature writer and columnist at the New York Times, and her work work has also appeared in Newsweek, where she began her career as a staff writer, Time, where she was a columnist, and Cosmopolitan, where she helps edit a quarterly section on women and work.

It is estimated that 76% of transactions for sex with underage girls start on the Internet. In King County, WA, a study conducted over a 24-hour period revealed that 8,800 people were online soliciting themselves for sex, and 27,000 were soliciting to buy. At any given time, 300-500 under aged girls are trafficked in King County. The average age of entry is 12-14 years old, with some as young as 8 or 9. Vicki talks with Carol Loya, founder of Escape to Peace, to discuss how we can raise awareness about the horrors of sex trafficking right in our own backyard.

Carol Loya, a local resident and owner of Truce Spa, founded Escape to Peace after she witnessed the horrors of the sex trade during a 2012 mission to Pattaya, Thailand. As a former Ambassador for the non-profits Shared Hope and Not Abandoned, Carol’s mission was to rescue girls being sold as sex slaves. She often did this by taking them to dinner to talk, then bringing them to a designated safe house.
