In The Buddha’s Wife, authors Samuel Shem and Janet Surrey share the uncommon knowledge that Buddha had a wife, one that he abandoned to seek enlightenment. Princess Yasodhara, after being left alone, was only able to move past such horrible grief because of the healing power of relationships within her community. Utilizing what is known as the Path of Right Relation, her story teaches us that we no longer have to go at it alone, but thrive when we lean on one another for help, guidance, and support. Shem has written several novels primarily with medical themes, and also an off-Broadway play. His novel about a medical internship, The House of God, was named by British medical journal The Lancet as one of the two most important medical novels of the 20th century. His wife and sometimes co-author, Janet Surrey, PhD, is an Insight Dialogue Teacher and practicing clinical psychologist.

New York Times bestselling author Hazel Gaynor in her own words… “In writing A Memory of Violets, I was constantly struck by the cruel contradiction of the lives of the flower sellers. Here were some of the poorest women and children in society, and yet every day they were surrounded by the beauty of the flower markets. Black-and-white images and shaky newsreel footage taken during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries give a fascinating glimpse into market life in London, but it is difficult for us to imagine what these scenes would have looked like in full color. Oddly beautiful, perhaps.”Having been featured in The Sunday Times and the Irish Times, the English born Gaynor currently resides in Ireland and was the recipient of the 2012 Cecil Day Lewis award for Emerging Writers.

Sasha Martin gave herself one simple task at the outset of writing Life From Scratch: A Memoir of Food, Family and Forgiveness… to chronicle her adventure of eating a meal from every country in the world with her picky husband and baby girl. Along the way, she came to realize the why she was doing this became much more important than the how, as her cooking unlocked long forgotten memories and helped to bring her peace through the worlds of food and culture.

Life From Scratch: A Memoir of Food, Family and Forgiveness is not a typical cookbook… as Sasha Martin undertook the journaling of her 195-country culinary odyssey, she came to realize her new cooking obsession was rooted in something much deeper. The further she ventured into her journey, she began unlocking memories of a rough-and-tumble childhood and the loss and heartbreak that came with it. Food and cooking provided an emotional outlet for her, both during her troubled childhood, and as she came to terms with it. Sasha is an award-winning writer and blogger who spent almost four years cooking her way around the world. Her work has been featured on NPR, Whole Living, Bon Appetit, The Smithsonian, and several other major media outlets. Her website, Global Table Adventure, is a go-to hub for foodies around the world.

Today’s show is loaded with adventure, facing the unknown head-on, and finding spiritualism in the most unlikely of places. First, author Hannah Papp lived out the fantasy many of us have of leaving the daily grind behind and going on a journey of self-discovery, no schedules, no commitments, no plan, just following her instincts. She shares her story in The Mystical Backpacker: How to Discover Your Destiny in the Modern World.
Our next adventurer today rode a tandem bicycle through 81 countries, along the way inviting over 1,000 total strangers to hop on and accompany him on his journey. Jamie Bianchini documents his epic expedition, in which he performed charitable acts at many stops along the way, in A Bicycle Built for Two Billion.
Our final guest today is a proponent of introducing meditation into the workplace environment and bringing about a spiritual awareness in leadership, leading to her being known as The Spiritual CEO. Alka Dhillon, author of The Om Factor: A Woman’s Spiritual Guide to Leadership, uses her book to help bring disparate aspects of your life into a harmonious whole, at work and at home.

Jamie Bianchini needed a lift. A big one. After a series of spectacular business flops drove him into bankruptcy and the love of his life kissed him goodbye, Jamie knew he needed a world of help. But instead of seeking assistance from a counselor or support group, he sought comfort where he’d always found it —on his bicycle. So he decided to go for a ride… around the world… on a tandem bike… inviting strangers he met to join him for a spin. A Bicycle Built for Two Billion is the moving story of an audacious optimist who tried to change the world – while hoping the world would change him – one rider at a time.
Two quotes can sum up Alka Dhillon’s new book, The Om Factor: A Woman’s Spiritual Guide to Leadership. The first is by the author herself… “Leadership is not about showing others the way. It is aligning your vibration with theirs to create a collaborative roadmap.” The second is from world renowned spiritualist Deepak Chopra… “Alka eloquently shares how to bring spirituality into the business world by giving the tools and steps to the soul of leadership.” The guidance contained in this book can be used to create harmony at work or in your home life. Alka is founder and CEO of Technalink, and has won numerous recognitions and awards for her business accomplishments, and is a frequent keynote speaker.
